Yesterday two exhibitions opened at Forma, Milan.
The first, which shows the works of Jacques Henri Lartigue, has been a pleasant surprise to me. He is a wealthy French bourgeois of the beginning of the XX century who portrayed the charmed, privileged world he belonged to all his life long: a declared effort to freeze those happy moments and a nostalgic attempt to make them last forever. I’ve been impressed by the grace, elegance and freshness of the images, by the author’s incredibly modern eye. The composition and mood of many pictures make them look like they are taken today, a sort of remembrance of the past with a vintage feel instead of a real document from it.
The second and widely promoted exhibition is “Polaroids” by Julian Schnabel (inevitably more known than Lartigue), great painter, capable director and King Midas of many artistic projects. On display his works taken with an old 20x24 inch camera which is as large as a fridge, a tool which can’t help but add some quid to the images themselves. The 80 photographs show his family, friends, paintings, workplace etc. The setting aims to offer “a unique and complex fresco that gives us access to his private life”, but seems an uncompleted tale which actually doesn’t give us the opportunity to discover anything about this versatile artist. What a pity.

Di recente siamo stati a Forma, che ospita due mostre di Jacques Henri Lartigue e Julian Schnabel. La prima è stata una piacevolissima sorpresa. Lartigue, ricco borghese di inizio Novecento, ha per anni ritratto il mondo dorato che lo circondava: una tensione dichiarata, la sua, a fissare la felicità di quei giorni unita al nostalgico desiderio di renderla eterna. A colpirci sono stati la grazia, l’eleganza e la freschezza delle sue foto, lo sguardo incredibilmente moderno. La composizione e l’atmosfera di molte delle immagini le fa sembrare scattate ai nostri giorni, quasi ci si trovasse di fronte a un gioco di rievocazione del passato che non alla sua effettiva registrazione.
Di maggiore richiamo, inevitabilmente, l’esposizione del nome più altisonante: Julian Schnabel, ottimo pittore, valido regista e in generale re Mida di numerosi progetti artistici. In mostra le Polaroid da lui realizzate con un vecchio apparecchio panoramico 20x24 pollici (per capirsi, la fotocamera è grande come un frigorifero), un mezzo che di per se’ aggiunge un quid alle immagini. Le foto, un’ottantina, ritraggono la famiglia, gli amici, l’ambiente di lavoro, le sue opere… Peccato per l’allestimento, quello che vorrebbe essere “un complesso affresco che ci permette di entrare nella vita privata dell’autore” a noi sembra rimanere un racconto accennato dal quale si esce senza avere scoperto un gran ché su Schnabel.
