The C/O Museum in Berlin pays homage to Peter Lindbergh with a retrospective - the largest of his work ever to be put together - which looks back over his intense career, not only through the famous editorials, but also thanks to some previously unpublished works and an entire section curated by German critic Klaus Honnef.
The exhibition collects 120 photographs and films, including never-before published Archive-Polaroids as well as documentary films, providing insights into his approach to work.
He is more than a photographer, he’s a visionary storyteller, often arranging his photographs based on famous film scenes or working with photographic quotes. Fashion seems just his excuse to play with genres and languages, explore human nature and paint a fresco enriched with his huge “archive” of influences and interests.


Lindbergh, born in 1944 in Lissa (Poland), is one of the most renowned fashion photographers worldwide. He spent his childhood in Duisburg and completed an apprenticeship as a window dresser in 1963. He studied design and painting in Berlin and Krefeld. In 1971, he became a photographic assistant to Hans Lux and in 1973 began working as a free-lance fashion photographer. His professional breakthrough came with the publication of his first fashion photos on “Stern” in 1978. Soon thereafter, he moved to Paris and began publishing his work in all the major international fashion magazines—from Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, and Harper’s Bazaar to The New Yorker and Rolling Stone.There are few top models, actresses and celebs that his lens has not immortalised.
Today he lives and works in Paris, New York, and Arles.

Il C/O Museum di Berlino rende omaggio a Peter Lindbergh con quella che è probabilmente la maggiore retrospettiva mai realizzata, un lungo percorso che si snoda fra editoriali famosi e lavori inediti, arricchito anche da una sezione appositamente curata dal critico tedesco Klaus Honnef.
La mostra, che offre l’opportunità di approfondire lo stesso approccio creativo di questo grande autore, raccoglie 120 opere, inclusi film documentari e Polaroid d’archivio per la prima volta rese pubbliche.
Lindbergh non è infatti un semplice fotografo di moda, ma un visionario raccontastorie che dissemina le proprie immagini di citazioni, strizzando spesso l’occhio al cinema. La moda sembra, nel suo caso, un puro pretesto per poter giocare con generi e linguaggi, esplorare la natura umana e dipingere un personale affresco generato dal suo inesauribile archivio di interessi, rimandi e influenze.

Peter Lindbergh è nato nel ‘44 in Polonia, a Lissa. Ha studiato come vetrinista e, successivamente, si è dedicato al design e alla pittura a Berlino e Krefeld. Si è avvicinato alla fotografia facendo da assistente ad Hans Lux per passare alla professione freelance nel 1973. Il suo primo editoriale di moda, realizzato per “Stern”, è del 1978. Poco dopo si traferisce a Parigi e man mano conquista le copertine di tutti i maggiori magazine del mondo: Vogue, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar,The New Yorker e Rolling Stone. Difficile trovare una top model, attrice o celebrità che non sia stata immortalata dal suo obiettivo.
Oggi vive e lavora fra Parigi, New York e Arles.
